Cryotherapy: A Treatment for Pre-Cancerous Skin Lesions & Cosmetic Concerns

Our office applies cryotherapy to the skin to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue. A cold liquid nitrogen spray is used to treat pre-cancerous skin lesions such as actinic keratosis (AK) which can result from sun damage. The pre-cancerous lesion cells are essentially burned off due to the freezing temperature of the liquid nitrogen. Warts, skin tags and other unwanted benign skin growths can be treated in this same manner. Cryotherapy is also effective for targeting hyperpigmented areas like age spots, sun spots, and liver spots (solar lentigines).

Cryotherapy Can Improve Skin Texture
Cryotherapy promotes collagen production and elastin. The cold temperature triggers a natural healing response from the body, encouraging proteins that promote great skin texture and tone. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles are treated. As a bonus, the skin looks more youthful and rejuvenated with each treatment. It also acts as a skin tightener, due to the freezing nature of the treatment while also boosting blood circulation and minimizing inflammation in the body.

After a cryotherapy treatment, it is important for patients to avoid sun exposure. There may be some slight swelling or redness immediately after your cryotherapy session but it will subside. Cryotherapy provides both aesthetic and therapeutic benefits which you can learn more about when scheduling your consultation at OC Skin Institute with our team of highly qualified dermatologists and nurses.
