Microdermabrasion can be an ideal treatment for clients who wish to rid their skin of scars, age spots, sun spots and skin that has become dry and dull. Like traditional dermabrasion, microdermabrasion removes the top layer of skin where the cells are dry and dead. However, microdermabrasion is a much gentler process, and the recovery time is much less.
What should I expect from my Orange County microdermabrasion procedure?
Most clients won’t need a topical anesthetic for microdermabrasion, though all of our Orange County dermatology offices have a numbing agent available for clients with sensitive skin. The treatment usually involves the client’s face, neck, chest or hands.
During microdermabrasion treatments, tiny particles of aluminum oxide, salt or baking soda are sprayed on the skin. These particles loosen the dead skin, which is then sucked up by a suction tool. Microdermabrasion also tricks the body into thinking that it’s been injured. In response, the body makes more, fresh skin cells and makes its own collagen. This is a protein that forms a cushion under the skin and keeps it elastic.
Afterwards, the skin will be pink and a little swollen. However, after a period of rest the client will be able to go home. Though it’s possible to return to normal activities, most clients will rest for a day or two. This is why the best time to have microdermabrasion is right before the weekend!
The certified cosmetic dermatologist might prescribe moisturizer to make sure that the skin is hydrated and to ease discomfort. Because the top layer of skin has been removed it’s easier for the skin to absorb any moisturizer or emollient. The client should stay out of the sun for at least a day and avoid wearing make-up during that time. If the client must go out in the sun he or she will need to wear sunscreen.
