Skin cancer is one of the leading causes of death among people with cancer, but in many instances the deaths may have been prevented if the cancer had been caught early enough. However, most people fail to take the time to conduct a self-examination of their own bodies to look for any abnormalities. Looking at and examining each mole on one’s body to determine if any changes are happening can go far in determining whether further examination by a dermatologist is needed.
Of course, the best way to prevent skin cancer is by visiting a dermatologist yearly to get an annual exam. Along with this, a self-examination can be easily done in the privacy of your home. The best time to do this exam is after a bath or shower, using a full-length or handheld mirror in a well-lit room. All areas of the body should be checked, starting with the head, neck and ears while working your way down. Next, look at the front and back of your body, and also under your arms. Your hands and legs should also be examined, since they are vulnerable areas. Also, don’t forget the soles of your feet and toes for anything unusual. Pay careful attention to new moles or ones having a different size, shape or color than before. A sore spot that won’t heal or a dark, flaky patch that’s raised is also cause for concern. By doing a skin check now and then, an unnecessary tragedy may be avoided.
