Skin cancer can be a very serious and even life-threatening condition, but unfortunately, not everyone knows the signs that could be pointing to cancer of the skin. Not all kinds of skin cancer are the same, so just checking for unnatural moles might leave you ignoring something that could potentially be dangerous.
Here are the most common forms of skin cancer and the warning signs you should look out for.
Actinic Keratosis
Also known as pre-cancer, Actinic Keratosis is identified by a lesion that is scaly or crusty in texture. Actinic Keratosis occurs from spending too much time in the sun, which can damage the skin. Although Actinic Keratosis does not identify the presence of cancer, it does increase the risk of developing skin cancer in the future.
Basal Cell Carcinoma
As the most common form of skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma can be found most frequently on the areas exposed to the sun, including the face, ears, scalp, neck or shoulders. While anyone can develop Basal Cell Carcinoma, there are some individuals who need to be more aware of the cancer, including fair skinned individuals or those with light features. The first signs of Basal Cell Carcinoma can actually be confused with a pimple or zit or might look like a sore that continues to return.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous Cell Carcinoma is developed much in the same way as Basal Cell Carcinoma and is more prevalent in individuals with fair skin and light features, but Squamous Cell Carcinoma can occur for reasons other than tanning or unexpected sun exposure. If you have a serious skin injury or chronic inflammation of the skin, you are also at risk for developing Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Squamous Cell Carcinoma can spread to the internal organs, so if you experience any red sores or scaly patches of skin, see a dermatologist immediately.
Melanoma
Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and is most commonly the culprit of excessive tanning or sun exposure. Anyone is at risk of developing melanoma, but there are certain factors that could increase the risk of the skin cancer, such as number of moles and fairness of skin. Signs of melanoma include asymmetrical spots that grow. When melanoma is caught early, it can be cured but if it is ignored and continues to spread, it can be life threatening.
